Abstract

Objective: Vitiligo is an acquired depigmentation disorder occurs with destruction of melanocytes, a common skin disease. Although many theories have been suggested for its pathogenesis, the role of autoimmunity is the most popular one. It is known the increased prevalance of autoimmun thyroid diseases and thyroid autoantibodies in vitiligo patients compare with controls. Our objective was to compare the prevalance of thyroid disorder, thyroid function tests and anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO), anti-thyroglobulin (anti-TG) in vitiligo patients with healty subjects in Usak region.

Materials and Methods: Sixty six cases of vitiligo (34 female and 32 male) and fifty four control subjects (26 female and 28 male) were enrolled in this study. FT3, fT4, TSH, anti-TG and anti-TPO levels were measured using siemens commercial kits with "chemiluminescent enzyme immunometric method in the Siemens Advia Centaur XP hormone analyzer. Anti-TPO and anti-TG in 24 vitiligo patients and 24 controls subjects were also assesed as well.

Results: We detected various thyroid pathology and /or abnormal throid fuction tests 25% (17/66) in patients group and 5.5% (3/54) control group (p=0,01). Although we didn't found a statistically significant difference the mean anti-TG and anti-TPO levels in vitiligo patients compared with controls, we only detected a statistically significant difference in terms of anti-TPO percent of pozitivity (p=0,04). Anti-TPO was increased 29.1% (7/24) in patients and 4.1% (1/24) in controls, anti TG was increased 20.8% (5/24) in patients and 4.1% (1/24) in controls (p=0,18).

Conclusion: Accordding to our study, the increased of anti-TPO level was shown to be significantly more common in vitiligo patients. As this antibody is relatively sensitive and spesific marker of autoimmune thyroid disorders including Hashimato thyroiditis and Graves' diseases. We recommend to be periodically follow up vitiligo patients in terms of thyroid gland diseases.
