Relation of High Sensitive C-reactive Protein (HSCRP) and Obesity

Abstract

Objective: Obesity is the leading public health problem in this century. In this study we aimed to evaluate the hsCRP levels which are the indicators of inflammation in obese people (defined with BMI) and assess the relation between obesity and hsCRP.

Materials and Methods: Study included 31 male and 77 female, totally 108 healthy individuals. According to body mass index (BMI) they were divided into 3 groups; 25 were in normal, 49 were in over-weighted and 34 were in obese group. HsCRP levels were measured with chemiluminescent immunometric assay. All results were evaluated statistically.

Results: HsCRP level difference was not significant between the normal and over-weighted groups (p=0.569), but levels were differed between the normal and obese groups (p<0.001), and between the over-weighted and obese groups (p=0.002). Insülin (r=0.274, p=0.004), BMI (r=0.495, p<0.001) and HOMA-IR (r=0.299, p=0.002) showed a positive correlation with HsCRP in all group.

Conclusion: When hsCRP levels of non-obese, over-weighted, and obese groups were compared, a significant relation was found between the hsCRP and obesity and also that hsCRP level increases in accordance with weight increase were demonstrated.
