Abstract

Objective: Vitamin D has been suggested to have an effect on erythropoesis. In this study we aimed to investigate the association between iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and vitamin D deficiency (VDD) in premenopausal women.

Materials and Methods: A total of 100 female patients with IDA and 21 healthy female without IDA were included to the study. Complete blood counts, plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD), serum calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), ferritin and parathormon levels of all participants were studied.

Results: Mean age of IDA group was 37.1±11.4 years and control group was 35.2±4.7 years (p>0.05). Hemoglobin, hematocrite, mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) were lower and red cell distribution width (RDW) was higher in IDA group as expected (p<0.001). Mean 25OHD was 10.1±5.4 µg/L in IDA and 15.0±5.6 µg/L in control groups. Serum calcium and ALP were significantly higher in IDA group (p<0.01 and p<0.001, respectively). In Pearson correlation analysis 25OHD correlated with hemoglobin, hematocrite, MCV; MCH; MCHC and iron levels.

Conclusion: 25OHD in female patients with IDA are lower according to healthy subjects, however, it cannot be related to the degree of anemia. For that reason VDD should be awared in patients with IDA and should be prevented or treated on time.
