Which Method is More Accurate in Patient-side Glucose Monitoring Systems?
Abstract
Objective: Comparison of two patient-side glucometers, Accuchek Active (AC) and Optium Xceed (OP)with autoanalyzer Olympus AU 2700 (OL), which uses the reference method.
Materials and Methods: 44 patients, aged over 18, who attended emergency and internal medicine clinics at Goztepe Training and Research Hospital, were recruited fort he study. 2 cc blood was drawn from the antecubital vein and transefered to Standard tubes with EDTA. All samples were studied in each device twice, mean values were recorded.
Results: Pyrolinquinoline quinon-linked glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) enzyme using bis- (2- hydroxyethyl)- (4-hydroxyiminohexo 2,5-dieniliden)-ammonium chloride as a mediator, was superior to NAD (nicotinamide dinucleotide)-linked GDH enzyme using PQ (phenantroline quinone) as a mediator, in measuring glucose levels closer to the reference method. All measurements with hexokinase method were lower than GDH method and the difference between them showed a linear correlation with increasing glucose levels.
Conclusion: Accuracy of measurements with regards to the reference method should be the point of care in choosing patient-side glucometers. It must be kept in mind that all portable glucometers read higher levels than the reference method and this might be emphasized in education for diabetes.
