Relationship Between Obesity Indices and C-Peptide in Healthy Adult Men
Abstract
Objective: The aim of the present study is to investigate the relation between new obesity indices waist circumference/height (WtHR), visceral adiposity index (VAI) and body adiposity index (BAI) and homeostasis model assessment of insülin resistance (HOMA-IR) index and pancreatic beta cell function in healthy adult men.
Materials and Methods: Non-smoker and non-drinker 51 healthy adult men whose HOMA-IR index were under the 2,5 included to this study. Fasting serum glucose, triglyceride, HDL, insulin and Cpeptide levels were measured and body mass index (BMI), WtHR, BAI and VAI were calculated. Insulin resistance was considered by HOMA-IR index; beta cell function and insulin secretion were considered by serum C-peptide level. Pearson's correlation test was performed to correlation analysis.
Results: WtHR showed positive correlations with serum glucose, insülin and C-peptide levels (r values were; 0,411; 0,341 and 0,451 respectively). In addition BMI showed positive correlations with serum glucose, insülin and C-peptide levels too (r values were; 0,424; 0,396 and 0,473 respectively). VAI showed positive correlations with serum glucose and C-peptide levels (r values were; 0,725 and 0,354 respectively). BAI was not correlated with any biochemical parameters excepted HOMA-IR index. There were positive correlations between the HOMA-IR index and all of the obesity indices (r values were 0,434; 0,455; 0,526 and 0,572 respectively for BAI, VAI, WHtR and BMI).
Conclusion: WtHR and BMI showed the strongest relationships with beta cell activity and insülin resistance. WHtR is the most reminder of BMI in this aspect. Although some metabolic parameters were used in calculation of VAI, it showed similar results to other indices. Whereas BAI was related to insülin resistance, it wasn't related to insülin secretion.
