Levels of Ferritin, Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid in Patients with Vitiligo in Usak Region
Abstract
Objective: Vitiligo is an acquired depigmentation disorder occur with destruction of melanocytes, a common skin disease. We aimed to investigate ferritin, vitamin B12 and folic acid levels in patients with vitiligo in Usak region.
Material and Methods: A hundred and two cases with vitiligo (60 female and 42 male) and a hundred and two control subjects (60 female and 42 male) were enrolled in this study. Ferritin, vitamin B12 and folic levels were measured by Advia Centaur XP (Siemens, USA). The collected data were analyzed by SPSS version11.5.
Results: Comparing the patients and control subjects, the mean values of ferritin were found a statistically significant difference between groups (p = 0.664). The mean values of vitamin B12 and folic acid have detected statistically significant difference between groups (p = 0.041 and p = 0.025, respectively).
Conclusion: Vitamin B12 and folic acid may play a role in the pathogenesis of vitiligo disease. We recommend that vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency in patients with vitiligo were evaluated in the outpatient clinical examination and laboratory tests are done periodically in follow-up.
