Clinical Biochemical Approach to Semen

1 Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Biyokimya Anabilim Dalı, İzmir

Abstract

Insufficiency in one or more male genital organs is the cause of infertility in more than %50 of the affected couples. For this reason; a close examination of the semen is an important factor in pinpointing the source and the cause of infertility. In addition; this examination avails the evaluation of a vasectomy, the detection of the presence of semen in forensic medicine and in detecting exposure of the male reproductive tract to toxins and pollutants. In this review sample preparation conditions are defined for biochemical analysis of semen and the biochemical evaluation of the function of reproductive sex organs contributing to semen are discussed.
