Abstract

Objective: Recently It's thought that Vitamin D deficiency not only adversely affects musculoskeletal system but also many other systems in our body. Since operating room staff exposed to sunlight lesser than the majority of population, we tried to show Vitamin D status of operating room staff.

Materials and Methods: 100 (27 male, 73 female) operating room staff were included in our study. Blood samples obtained after overnight fasting then serum of blood samples were separated by centrifugation. 25 hydroxy Vitamin D3, parathyroid hormone and calcium levels were determined on the same day. Blood samples were obtained in December 2014 in order to avoid seasonal variations.

Results: 22% participants of this study has 25 Hydroxy Vitamin D3 levels below 10 ng/ml, 63% has between 11-20 ng/ml and 15% has above 20 ng/ml. There were no significant relation between 25 Hydroxy Vitamin D3 levels and working time, age, sex and body mass index.

Conclusion: In our study we found high rates of Vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency in operating room staff that included our study. We claim that the reason of high Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency rates in our participants is more likely to be a reflection of Turkish population characteristics rather than working conditions.
