Abstract

Objective: In this study, we aimed to investigate serum and urine gamma glutamyltransferase (GGT) levels in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF), and also to determine the changes in the different stages of CRF.

Materials and Methods: Serum and urine GGT and serum creatinin levels were measured in 68 nondiabetic CRF patients. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated.

Results: Urine GGT activity and urine GGT / creatinine ratio were lower in patients with CRF compared to healthy subjects (p = 0.000; p = 0.033). Serum GGT activity was higher in patients with CRF than the control group (p = 0.008). There were no significant differences in serum and urine GGT levels according to stages of patients with CRF.

Conclusion: It was concluded that urine GGT levels are not informative for monitoring patients with CRF.
