Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this stu dy was to investigate the potentially causal relationship between anger management, anxiety and depression with leptin and glycemic control in type 2 diabetic patients.

Methods: Forty Type 2 diabetic patients were enrolled in this study and serum leptin and HbA1clevels were measured. Psychological outcomes were assessed with the Beck Depression, Spielberger Stait-Trait Anger Expression, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventories.

Results: No significant difference was found between glycemic control, leptin levels and depression and anxiety scores. In the highest tertile of trait anger subgroup leptin values were significantly lower compared to the lowest tertile (p=0.035). Comorbid chronic somatic diseases were found to be associated with depression scores (p=0.031).

Conclusions: The differences observed in leptin levels in the anger trait subgroups of diabetic patients may be the result of the effects of personality and stres on the sympathetic and/or neuroendocrine systems which play important roles in the physiological regulation of metabolism.
